The book starts showing us a lieutenant, the lieutenant Francis P. Bacon., an American scientist sent to Germany, to the Nuremberg Prison, to be resent in the judgments of the high rated persons in the Nazi empire. When Francis came to the hotel where he will sleep, he had problems with his room, so, the staff gave him the suite where Hitler used to sleep. Bacon decided to sleep a little bit, but he did it a lot and he lost the judgements. Them, he started check the declarations of the accused and he saw something rare on it, he found only one time the name “Klingsor”.

Then, the book goes back in time to tell us about the Bacon’s childhood. He, showed abilities and a kind of love for the mathematics, especially in topics related with the physic, in fact, he disconnected himself from the world per hours to can find the answer of a problem. Bacon studied in the Princeton University, highlighting because his knowledge and singular abilities. At last, Bacon is invited to be part of the researching group in the Princeton Institute, which counts with the presence of brilliant minds, like Einstein and Von Neumann, this last became his chief. But the book not only tell us about the academy life of this character, also gives us some information about his personal life, like his lovely relationships. In this case, Francis has many problems with this topic, because he fell in love with a black woman, Vivien, and with a rich and elegant woman, Elizabeth. He didn’t know what to do, he loved to Vivien, but his friends and family wouldn’t accept the relationship, and didn’t feel the same for Elizabeth, because she wasn’t interesting like Vivien, but the persons

The young illustrious continued doing their work at the Institute acquired only there comes a point where you feel, in a way, discouraged, feels that such work is not his, despite being one of the best physicists your age; plus I was indecisive and troubled by the inability to decide what to do about the above two women. He once shared his concerns with Von Neumann, who told him he had to make a decision soon, otherwise the results would be fatal. Bacon was unable to follow the advice of his teacher and the results were provided for therein, except that, moreover, the collision of circumstances happened during an exhibition at the Institute. Bacon thought he had sentenced her future, and somehow it was, only that the results were not as catastrophic, Bacon was recruited for a secret mission on behalf of their country. The mission called Alsos and aimed to pursue and capture the key scientists involved in the development of quantum physics in Germany.

The book pauses Bacon's story to show the Gustav Links, the real narrator of the book. Gustav was a child born into a wealthy family no, which I had to live a somewhat difficult for Bavaria, his native time. Academic studies were not as easy as they were for Francis, but Links had a friend, nay friend, a brother, Heinrich. Unlike Gustav, Links came from a wealthy family, and at first liked math and second philosophy, so it could be said that they had many things in common, but there's the key ... complemented.

First, Gustav decided to study mathematics and specialize in the problem of continuity that the great Cantor was never resolved, and secondly, Heinrich finished studying philosophy; so their friendship was affected by distance.

One day, Gustav Heinrich received a letter from the inviting him to spend time with his old friend and the friend's girlfriend. Links agreed to attend the evening, a decision that would change his life forever, since Gustav end up marrying the lady who bore the name Marianne and Heinrich with Natalia. The relationship between the two partners was very good, tried seen very often and go for a walk to see new places.

Everything seemed great until one day Heinrich broke the news to his "brother" that Gustav had decided to enlist in favor of the German army. Links took it very badly, he felt betrayed by Heinrich. Their relationship seemed spoiled.

Following this, the story goes back to when Bacon is faced with the problem of Klingsor. Francis was hesitant, not sure if that name actually meant something or just was something that should pass unnoticed. The lieutenant, desperate, take the challenge and decides to take on the task of investigating who Klingsor was, because in the commentary that appeared the name, mentioned that Klingsor was responsible for deciding the course of German science. Klingsor granted permission or disapproval of any investigation and distributed the funds needed for this.

Bacon, lost and without a clue where to start your research, enlists the help of Professor Von Neumann. This makes every effort to help and gets a name ... Gustav Links. He mentions that his friend was old and surely he can help more.

Arriving at Francis Links, explains the reason for his visit. After talking a while, Bacon sought his help and guidance to carry out the investigation. Gustav accessed with the condition that, in the end, his name also appears in the report. The lieutenant doubt, but eventually agrees.

Both started doing research interviewing Planck, which gives a very good help to take it as a starting point. The same research leads them to investigate other brilliant minds of German science, as were Johannes Stark, Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schrödinger. Everything seemed to point, initially for the probable Klingsor was Stark, but after thinking about it some more and gather information the idea was scrapped.

Parallel to this, history tells us, as usual, things of privacy of both scientists. For Bacon, it's telling us about his affair he had with Irene, her neighbor across the street, which came to interfere in the investigation itself. But in the case of Links, it tells us about what happened in his life after Heinrich decided to enlist in the army; not dwell much on the report, I will only mention that Links began keeping a loving relationship with his wife and Natalia, which always love a secret.

Returning to that referred to Klingsor, once discarded the idea that Stark could be the mystery man, everything seemed to indicate that the real Klingsor was Heisenberg, the head of the German atomic project. Bacon decide to go with Irene to interview Bohr and only confirms their suspicions.

The story becomes focus on the fact of the relationship between Bacon and Irene, who Gustav discovers she's a spy and decides to tell Francis about it, but when it does it's too late, Irene had already implemented the idea Bacon that actually was lying Links. The lieutenant realizes that Irene was lying, but anger is so much that intrudes into a state of depression in which the last thing you want is to continue with the investigation.

THE mode of narration longer last time and begins to be in the present tense. The narrator remains the same, Gustav Links, only now about 42 years ago and since then a madhouse. The story remains the same, only now tells us the outcome of the transaction. To start Gustav begins to have a secret relationship only with Natalia; besides that, influenced by Heinrich, becomes a participant in the attack on July 20 against Hitler, why ends up going to prison in near the end of the Second World War. As for Bacon, this ends forgiving to and believing him to Irene and therefore end up blaming her research partner as the real Klingsor, so this is tortured with intent to get the truth and finally sent to a mental hospital, which is in which is right now.

IN SEARCH OF KLINGSOR

will be ok with this couple because she was rich, beautiful and “lovely”; to Francis, Elizabeth was more like a headache. Bacon didn’t know what to do, so, one day, he decided to talk about this problem with Von Neumann. The professor told him that he must select one of them, Vivien or Elizabeth, or everything will be bad and wouldn’t have any solution. The student didn’t do what his professor told him to do and happened what Von Neumann expects to happen. Francis, because Elizabeth made him a disaster in the middle of a conference, must travel to Europe to be part of the Alsos mission. This mission has the purpose of pursuit and capture to the main scientists involved with the German quantum physics.
